What we Seek

We focus on long term secular trends and most of our investments are concentrated in the following sectors:

Digital Transformation

Digital technologies have advanced more rapidly than any innovation in history – reaching more than half of the developing world’s population in only two decades and transforming societies. By enhancing connectivity, financial inclusion, access to trade and public services, digital technology is fundamentally changing the lives of billions of people.

Moving at breakneck speed, businesses are using digital technologies to transform existing traditional and non-digital business processes and services, or creating new ones, to meet with the evolving market and customer expectations, thus completely altering the way businesses are managed and operated, and how value is delivered to customers.

Clean Energy

The world is experiencing an energy transition that has the potential to create a modern energy system that can power the world in ways that are cleaner, safer, more affordable, and reliable.

The clean energy transition means shifting energy production away from sources that release greenhouse gases, such as fossil fuels, to those that release little to no greenhouse gases. Hydro, wind, solar, green hydrogen and geothermal are some of these clean sources.

Generating power from renewables is only part of the energy transition. Mass introduction of electric transportation infrastructure and energy storage, coupled with greater usage of technologies to improve energy efficiency, are also driving this long-term secular trend.

Biotechnology

According to McKinsey & Company, a confluence of advances in biological science and accelerating development of computing, automation, and artificial intelligence is fueling a new wave of innovation. We believe that this bio revolution, which has been decades in the making, will have significant impact on economies and our lives, from health and agriculture to consumer goods, and energy and materials.

Some of the most notable innovations occurring in biotech include gene editing, personalized medicine, vaccines, artificial intelligence, big data, and synthetic biology.

Our Approach

Starting a business is hard work. Developing a breakthrough technology is even harder. In addition to providing capital, we provide our portfolio companies with countless years of experience in building businesses and developing technologies. We are very hands-on in the formulation of a portfolio company’s technology and business strategy. We have learned from years of experience that poor strategic decisions quickly magnify into very expensive problems. Therefore, we focus intently on the strategy. After our initial investment, we act as ongoing advisors in helping a portfolio company’s management team address critical challenges.

We concentrate primarily on early-stage technology companies because these businesses offer the greatest potential for financial returns. Further, we find personal enjoyment and satisfaction spending our time with high tech entrepreneurs. We are not money managers and only invest our own funds. Because we are active investors, we only invest in a limited number of new portfolio companies each year.

Public Market

With the emergence of electronic trading and increased corporate governance and transparency, the public stock market has become a safer place for investors and a more favorable environment for development stage companies to access capital. Instead of relying on the traditional venture capital funding model, we encourage early-stage companies with breakthrough technologies to obtain public venture capital by operating as publicly traded companies.
